Guide to the Houston Museum District

There are many wonderful museum opportunities in the Houston area. This guide serves to give a brief description of many of the museums with information necessary for the museum visitor.

The Buffalo Soldier’s National Museum is a museum dedicated to the Buffalo Soldier. This museum is dedicated to preserving the history and memorabilia of African American soldiers who gallantly served our country after 1866. It is located at 1834 Southmore Boulevard.

The Byzantine Fresco Chapel is another great site to visit when touring the Museum District in Houston. This chapel holds the only Byzantine fresco of this size and splendor in the Western Hemisphere.Check out this link here. It is located at 4011 Yupon Street.

The Children’s Museum is located at 1500 Binz Street. It is touted as being a “Playground for Your Mind” with many interesting activities for children of all ages. It has been recently expanded and has 90,000 square feet of interactive exhibits for the whole family to enjoy.

The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston has the reputation of collecting the best examples of modern art in the last 40 years. The Contemporary Arts Museum is located at 5216 Montrose Street.

Located at 4920 San Jacinto Street, the Czech Center Museum was designed to promote and preserve the language and culture of the Czech people.

The Health Museum is located at 1515 Hermann Drive. This museum is Houston’s most interactive museum, and is dedicated to educating people about health issues and the workings of the human body.

The Holocaust Museum commemorates the lives and history of those who lost their lives in the concentration camps of World War II. It is located at 5401 Caroline Street.

There are several world class art museums for art lovers to enjoy in the Houston museum district. These art museums include the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Houston Photography Center, Lawndale Art Center, The Menil Center, The Museum of Fine Arts and the Rice University Art Gallery.

Other museums available in the Huston Museum district are the Huston Zoo, the John C. Freeman Weather Museum and the Huston Museum of Natural Science and the Jung Center.
